Taffeta Chocolate Panel Blinds
I was convinced this was a soft fabric when I saw the images from this recent order! When I discovered it was a stiffened fabric from Louvolite, I was a little surprised as I always prefer curtain material used on Panel Blinds and yet here was a design that looked like a soft fabric!
The patterned panels are Louvolite ‘Taffeta Chocolate’ and the plain panel fabric was Eclipse ‘Palette Sand’.
Shoji Blinds
Shoji Blinds are based on Japanese Shoji screens but much simpler to manufacture. The rigid panels are fixed to a panel glide track and operated by cord or wand in the same wasy as a Japanese Panel Blind but the overall effect is of a Shoji Screen, diffusing light gently with excellent privacy.
Shoji blinds are popular in minimalist rooms, especially Apartments with a large expanse of glass to cover or as a room divider. Shoji blinds are also extremely affordable, unlike Shoji Screens and blinds can be removed easily, whereas screens are fitted permanently.
Using either traditional Japanese ‘Washi’ paper to manufacture Shoji Blinds or stronger material such as fabric, the effect is still authentic. Although the paper is fairly stong we wouldn’t recommend Washi paper if you have children or pets, so stronger materials that looks very similar to Washi paper can be easily substituted. In fact, a Shoji blind fitted as a room divider is ideal for families to section off living areas where toys are kept, especially when adults want to wind down in the evenings.

Fabric Wall Panels
Hand embroided fabrics make ideal hanging (wall) panels. The ‘Gustav’ collection has taken inspiration from the work of the great artist ‘Gustav Klimt’ which is an evocative collection of the wonderfully rich and detailed paintings of Klimt using hand appliqué techniques.
‘Gustav’ has a climbing tree design with a scattering of the rich velvets across the fabric & also comes with an organdy base giving the design lots of different scope within an interior. We’ve made the fabric into curtains, blinds & wall hangings which look fabulous in any of the colourways.

An example of cost for a wall panel in the Gustav fabric, fully made up on a timber frame and sealed on the reverse to protect the fabric: 117cm width by 145cm length £250 inclusive of VAT.
‘Gustav’ fabric is also available per metre.
Prestigious Textiles – Delamere
Brand new range ‘Delamere’ by Prestigious Textiles has caught my eye here at Highbury Design. The colours are fresh, vibrant, summery, reminiscent of the 1950s and Clarice Cliff tones. The geometric prints make a bold design statement in rooms where colour stories play an important role- it’s all about the reds, aquas & limes! If you like Sanderson designs, you’ll love Delamere!

Blackout Velcroed Panels
If you’ve got young kids, you’ll appreciate having their bedroom as dark as possible to encourage them to sleep well. Blackout roller blinds are the obvious choice for darkening a room, but often a roller blind will allow light through the gaps in the sides & you almost certainly need curtains fitted as well.
For complete darkness you could have a cassette roller blinds system although they tend to be very pricey – great as a long term investment, but as children get older they begin to understand what time they should be getting up, so you may only need a temporary solution.
An inexpensive alternative to a cassette roller blind for complete darkness is a piece of blackout material, velcroed to the window frame. You can simply attach the fabric for bedtime and remove it easily during the day. Here are the panels we made for my 2 year old twins bedroom. The room is in total darkness until we are ready to all get up at 6.30am, but they’d sleep longer if you let them now!!

Prestigious Textiles – Weekend
I’m totally in love with the Vintage prints in Prestigious Textiles’ new range ‘Weekend’. In fact, I’m disappointed that I haven’t got an excuse to buy one of the designs for a window in my house… well I have one window, but will I manage to persuade the boss I need it right now I wonder & it’s only £14 a metre?!
The fabulous thing about the range is you can buy it with a laminated PVC coating on one side, should you think it might get splashed! Great for bathrooms and kitchen windows and also great for matching accessories like aprons!

Weekend is a collection of cotton prints in the style of Cath Kidston prints to enliven family living areas. A glorious medley of ladybirds and butterflies, vintage rosebuds, stylised flowers and abstract geometrics is enhanced by an optional PVC glaze.
